Chapter 19
A lady should always have an attitude of gratitude.
Hey, beautiful. Want to go see a movie tonight?
Ugh. No. I want to drown myself in ice cream and tequila. Not tonight.
Come on. Itâll be fun. Iâll let you pick the movie.
Not happening.
Too late. Iâm here.
Ding dong. Damn.
âWhat are you doing here?â I demand of Brodie when I open the front door.
He smiles and shrugs. âCheering you up by taking you out on a date.â
âHow did you know I needed cheering up?â
His eyes snag on something behind me before he blushes and drops his head to stare at his shoes. I twirl around and â yep! â thereâs my grandmother standing at the end of the hallway. She gives me a thumbs-up before ducking her head back into the living room. Sheâs such a meddler! How did she even get Brodieâs phone number?
âLook, itâs sweet you came here to cheer me up, but I donât feel like going out.â
âJust go, Frankie girl,â Grandpa shouts from the living room. Is there no privacy in this house? âLord knows you could do with some cheering up.â I may have been a little grumpy since I came back home from the city this morning, but it canât have been too bad. âFinally, I can have control of the remote in my own home.â
Guess Iâm not wanted here. âFine,â I tell Brodie. âIâll go.â
âRemember, she doesnât have a curfew,â Grandma shouts. âFeel free to bring her back any time. Tomorrow morning is good.â
Oh my god! The woman is the bane of my existence. âLetâs get out of here before they try to sell me to you in marriage.â Iâm still in the clothes I wore to the office, so I grab my coat and purse and Iâm ready.
We donât talk as he drives to the movie complex. Brodie glances over at me a few times, looking as if he wants to say something, but he keeps his mouth shut. Smart man. I am in no way no how ready to talk to him about the humiliation I suffered this morning. Not happening.
He parks about a mile from the entrance to the building. I glare at him. His response? He smiles. And is there a challenging gleam in his eyes? Date your physical therapist, they said. Heâs hot, they said. It will be fun, they said. No one mentioned walking miles on crutches to get to a stupid movie you donât want to watch anyway.
âWhat do you want to see?â I manage to wheeze out my question when we finally make it the ticket counter.
âThereâs a new romantic comedy playing I thought you might like.â
I make a face of disgust. âRomantic comedy? What do you think I am? A girl?â
Brodie rubs the back of his neck as a light shade of pink colors his cheeks. âUm⦠yes? But we can see whatever you want.â
âIâm yanking your chain. I love romantic comedies. The cheesier the better.â
He chuckles as he buys tickets for the romcom. I pull out my wallet to pay my share, and he glares.
